About the Author

Niles’s Surprise Discoveries is author Ginger Smith’s first children’s book, and it is truly a labor of love. She found inspiration for the story twenty years ago after an experience with her eldest son, who is now an adult. The main character, Niles, embodies “black boy joy” in that he is happy, curious, energetic, caring, and smart. The character of Mr. Williams was created to celebrate the countless number of unofficial mentors within all communities. His exchange with Niles is an example of how mentors help to guide, inspire, and encourage children and youth to pursue and conquer their biggest dreams by sharing their own personal stories of resilience.

A graduate of Temple University with a BA in Radio, Television, and Film, Smith is a firm believer in life-long learning. She possesses over seventeen years of experience in the social service field and takes great pride in organizing community engagement events as well as in volunteering. She resides in Philadelphia and is an active mother in the lives of her children.

The art of storytelling isn’t for the faint of heart. Storytellers are often full of aching beautiful moments. Ginger Smith’s literally offering “Nile’s Surprise Discoveries” explore the broadening scope black boy joy. Not only does he find a creature he can’t identify, he declares his trajectory in the last paragraph of this amazing tale that he will be a veterinarian. How can you not love a young person declaring their trajectory at such an young age? She didn’t create Niles by happenstance, but she wanted to write a narrative for black and brown kids to remind them how super awesome they are and can be whatever they want.
